eBook Formatting & Conversion

The Right eBook Format for Your Book

A Word file is not an ebook. Stores need a properly built EPUB, and the build depends on what kind of book you wrote.

Reflowable EPUB

Novels, memoirs, nonfiction

Text reflows to fit any screen and font size the reader picks. This is the format most books need.

  • Clickable table of contents
  • Chapter styles, drop caps, scene breaks
  • Linked footnotes and endnotes
Fixed-layout EPUB

Picture books, cookbooks, comics

Every page keeps its exact design, so images and text stay where your designer put them.

  • Full-bleed illustrations
  • Two-page spreads
  • Text kept selectable where stores allow
Accessible EPUB

Books sold to EU readers

The European Accessibility Act now applies to ebooks sold in the EU. We build files readers with screen readers can use.

  • Alt text for every image
  • Correct reading order and headings
  • Accessibility metadata

Strategy

KDP Select or Go Wide?Choose Before You Publish

This is the biggest decision in ebook publishing. KDP Select requires your ebook to be sold only on Amazon. Going wide means selling everywhere.

Option A

KDP Select

Best for genre fiction, series and binge readers

  • Your ebook joins Kindle Unlimited, and you earn per page read
  • Access to Kindle Countdown Deals and free-book promotions
  • Ebook must be exclusive to Amazon for each 90-day term
  • Paperbacks and hardcovers can still be sold anywhere

Option B

Go wide

Best for nonfiction, faith, business and international readers

  • Sell on Apple Books, Kobo, Barnes & Noble and Google Play
  • Reach library apps and readers outside the U.S.
  • No single store controls your income
  • Kobo Plus subscription without exclusivity

frequently asked questions

How much royalty do I earn on a Kindle ebook?
70% if your list price is between $2.99 and $12.99 on Amazon.com, minus a delivery fee of $0.15 per MB. Outside that range, you earn 35%. The upper limit was raised from $9.99 to $12.99 on July 7, 2026.
What file format do ebook stores need?
EPUB is the standard format accepted by Amazon KDP, Apple Books, Kobo and Barnes & Noble. Novels use reflowable EPUB. Picture books and cookbooks use fixed-layout EPUB.
Do I need an ISBN for my ebook?
Not for Amazon, which assigns its own ASIN. Most other ebook stores do not require one either. Some distributors do, and your own ISBN keeps your imprint name consistent across every store.
Should I enroll in KDP Select?
Enroll if you write genre fiction or a series and want Kindle Unlimited page-read income. Stay wide if you want readers on Apple, Kobo, libraries and international stores. KDP Select requires your ebook to be exclusive to Amazon for each 90-day term.
How long does it take to publish an ebook?
Once your manuscript is final, conversion and setup usually take one to two weeks. Store review is typically 72 hours or less, though some stores take longer for a first title.
Can I publish my ebook and paperback at the same time?
Yes. We prepare both from the same manuscript and link them on Amazon, so readers see every format on one product page.
Do you take a percentage of my ebook sales?
No. Your store accounts are in your name, and every royalty is paid directly to you.
Can I change my ebook price after publishing?
Yes, at any time on every store. Price changes usually go live within a day.
