Proofreading vs. Editing

Do You Need Proofreading or Editing?

Editing changes how your book reads. Proofreading makes sure nothing is wrong on the final page.

Most books need both, in this order.

What We Check

What Our Book Proofreaders Check on Every Page

We inspect the language, consistency and finished layout—not just the words a spellchecker can recognize.

Proof Check 03

Layout on the page

  • Running heads and page numbers

frequently asked questions

What is the difference between proofreading and editing?
Editing improves the writing: structure, flow, clarity and correctness. Proofreading is the final check for remaining typos, punctuation and layout errors on the formatted book. Editing comes first; proofreading comes last.
When should I get my book proofread?
After editing and after formatting, when the pages look the way they will in print. Proofreading before formatting misses layout errors such as widows, wrong page numbers and bad line breaks.
Can't I just use spellcheck or Grammarly?
Software catches many misspellings but misses correctly spelled wrong words, like "new" for "knew," inconsistent spellings across chapters, and every layout problem. Use software first, then a human proofreader.
What style guide do you follow?
The Chicago Manual of Style for most books, since it is the U.S. book publishing standard. We follow your own style sheet first if you have one, and can work in British spelling for UK editions.
Will you change my writing style?
No. Proofreading corrects errors only. We query anything that looks intentional, such as dialect in dialogue, instead of changing it.
Can typos hurt my book's sales on Amazon?
Yes. Typos lead to poor reviews, and readers can report quality problems to Amazon, which may ask you to fix and re-upload the file.
What do I receive back?
A marked-up PDF or a Word file with tracked changes, plus a short list of queries. You accept or reject each change before anything is final.
